Georgia’s 2014 elections kicked off on May 20 with the party primaries for both the Democratic and Republican parties. Now that primaries are over there are a number of runoff elections happening on July 22 and we do not want to miss an opportunity to let candidates know that children’s issues, such as child health, early care and education, juvenile justice and child welfare are vitally important to the future of Georgia, and that thoughtful, data-driven policies for all our young residents and those who care for them must be at the forefront of every candidate’s mind if they hope to be good stewards of our state.

That said, we are asking that you go the Georgia My Voter Page and find out who will be on YOUR ballot at the runoff this July, and reach out to candidates to tell them that children’s issues are important to you. You can also take a look at the election results from May 20 at the Secretary of State website.

The runoff is on July 22, but here are a few other important dates to keep in mind as well

  • General Election – November 4, 2014  (Voter registration Deadline:  October 6, 2014)
  • State and Local General Runoff – December 2, 2014  (Voter registration Deadline:  October 6, 2014)
  • Federal General Runoff – January 6, 2015   (Voter registration Deadline:  October 6, 2014)

P.S. If you are feeling a little unsure about what to say, you can use our sample messaging below.

“Dear [Candidate’s name],

Children’s issues, such as child health, early care and education, juvenile justice and child welfare are vitally important to the future of Georgia.  We hope that thoughtful, data-driven policies for all our young residents (and those who care for them) are at the forefront of your mind and are a large plank in your platform. Supporting and developing policies which address the health, academic and social-emotional needs of all children from birth through 23 is the most effective way to help children learn, achieve appropriate and timely developmental milestones and grow into responsible and caring adults.  It is also the best way to ensure a strong future for Georgia.  Thank you for considering these issues in your campaign.”
