First Lady Marty Kemp Kicks Off Georgia Pre-K Week

First Lady Marty Kemp kicked off the ninth annual Georgia Pre-K Week on October 7, 2019. It was Mrs. Kemp’s first official visit during Georgia Pre-K Week, a statewide event to highlight the importance of early education in Georgia.

Georgia’s Pre-K Program began as a pilot program in 1993, serving just 750 children at 20 sites. This year, more than 80,000 children are enrolled in Georgia’s Pre-K Program in more than 3,800 Pre-K classrooms in all 159 counties in the state. The most current results from a longitudinal study indicate that more than 60 percent of Georgia’s 4-year-olds will be better prepared for kindergarten next year. That study also shows that participation in Georgia’s Pre-K Program improves school readiness by helping children grow across all learning domains, including math, language and literacy, and social-emotional skills.
