Easy Ways to Support Afterschool in Georgia

As you may have heard, President Trump’s proposed budget eliminates funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, the only dedicated federal funding for afterschool, before school, and summer learning. It’s now up to Congress to counter the cut — or eliminate 21st CCLC, thereby getting rid of programs many families across Georgia and the nation rely on to keep their kids safe and engaged outside of school hours. Fortunately, a recent poll shows that 83% of Americans oppose cuts to afterschool and summer funding, but lawmakers need to hear from you about how vital these programs are to our state. So choose one, two, or all of the methods outlined below and show your support for 21st Century Community Learning Centers in Georgia!

Contact your Congressman

Contact your Congressmen TODAY and ask them to support the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Program using this message:
“Dear Representative ___________,
Please support the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program, the only federal funding for afterschool, before school, and summer learning programs, in the FY18 and final FY17 budgets. If eliminated,  nearly two million children – and 27,000 in Georgia – would lose access to the high-qualityafterschool, before school, and summer learning programs that help put them on a path to success in college, career, and life. Thank you for your service and for your leadership for the children of Georgia.”

The Afterschool Alliance is seeking national, state and local organizations to sign on to a national letter in support of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative. The letter asks for Congress to at least maintain the current funding level of $1.16 billion for 21st CCLC within the FY18 House and Senate spending bills, as opposed to the President’s proposed elimination. Please note that at this time the letter is only for organizations, not individuals. The deadline to sign on is next Monday, April 3rd.
